What Is the Bowie-Dick Test For?

It tests whether a vacuum steam sterilizer adequately removes air from the chamber and allows steam to penetrate all surfaces. If air pockets remain, sterilization may be incomplete — this test confirms the device isn't carrying that risk on a given day.

Frequency and Pack Options

Recommended as a daily routine, run on the first empty load of the day in each sterilizer. Available in different pack sizes (200 and 400 count).

Where It's Used

All central sterile departments using vacuum steam autoclaves run this test for daily performance verification of the device.
